ACT Car & General Knowledge Rules
Car General is a large, mixed category: parking, U-turns, mobile phone use, vehicle safety and lots of terminology. You're allowed two wrong answers, so nailing the common points and terms makes it manageable.
Mobile phone rules
- Holding a phone while driving is illegal — including reading/sending texts, emails or video messages.
- You may make or take calls only with hands-free or a phone mounted in a cradle.
- Navigation and music are fine if the phone is securely mounted and you don't need to touch it.
U-turns and three-point turns
- Give way to all other vehicles and pedestrians before a U-turn or three-point turn.
- Only do it with enough sight distance and space, without obstructing traffic.
Parking basics
- Don't park where you obstruct traffic or sight lines (intersections, crossings, near hydrants).
- Check for cyclists and traffic before opening your door.
Quick term glossary
- Give Way, Stop, Roundabout — core intersection terms.
- Median strip, slip lane, kerb — road layout terms.
- BAC = blood alcohol concentration; demerit points = penalty points.
FAQ
- Can I use my phone for navigation while driving?
- Yes, if the phone is securely mounted and you don't need to touch it; holding it is still illegal.
- How many can I get wrong in Car General?
- Two wrong answers are allowed in the mock exam (it's not a must-pass category).
