ACT Roundabout Rules Explained
Roundabout questions in the ACT test usually cover two things: who gives way on entry, and how to signal for different exits. Remember two principles — give way to traffic in the roundabout, and keep left of the central island.
Give way on entry
A vehicle entering a roundabout must give way to any vehicle already in it. Traffic moves anticlockwise (to the left) around the central island, so wait for a safe gap before entering.

Signalling (multi-lane roundabouts)
- Turning left (leaving before halfway): enter from the left lane, signal left before entering, keep it on.
- Straight (leaving about halfway): use the left or right lane, no entry signal required, signal left when leaving.
- Turning right (leaving past halfway): enter from the right lane, signal right on entry, then signal left near the exit.
- Always signal left when leaving the roundabout, if practicable.

Common diagram traps
- Trap: assuming 'give way to the right always' — in a roundabout it's give way to traffic already in it.
- Trap: thinking you must signal before entering when going straight — you don't, but you must signal left when leaving.
- Remember: drive to the left of the central island.

FAQ
- Who goes first at a roundabout?
- Vehicles already in the roundabout. An entering vehicle must give way to traffic already circulating.
- Do I signal when going straight through?
